Tuesday night. After 10 o'clock, Becky called my mom and told her Grandpa Canova was on his way to St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City. Suspicions of a heart attack was the reason! So...Dad got home from the temple, and he and I rushed down to St. Mark's. Turns out we beat the ambulance and everyone else there. Most the kids were helping Nate and Joni move that night, and mom wasn't feeling so well. So that's why I went with Dad. We waited for a short while and then we were able to go up to the ICU where he was just settled in a bed. The nurse was with him, asking questions and kind of informing us of the situation. By now, it was Me and Dad, Jim and Jamie, and Jerry and Debbie. Grandma and Julie had gone back to their house to get some stuff for Grandpa. She informed us kind of what was going on and just was doing the typical weighing grandpa, asking for meds, etc. Shortly the Cardiologist came in and asked if It was ok that he spoke while we were in the room, grandpa of course said that was fine. So...he asked Grandpa to describe what happened, symptoms over the weekend, his health history with dialysis and diabetes, the Doc, who had some crazy last name, listened to his heart and looked at his vitals and said this. I may be paraphrasing but he basically said, I believe you've had a series of heart attacks over the weekend, and that there has been significant damage to your heart. That's my suspicion. So...they kicked us all out to do an Ultrasound on his heart right then and there. So, we all sat in the ICU waiting room, and after a while Grandma (who had by this time arrived) came and told us there was in fact a problem with one of his valves. And that they'd perform an angiogram tomorrow (Wednesday) to see what can be done to fix it. So...we all went back in to Grandpa, gave him our love, and then used the consultation room to give Grandma a blessing, and Julie as well. (Jim had already given one to Grandpa at the initial hospital that sent him to St. Mark's) So we went home with him in our prayers.
Yesterday, I found out they did heart surgery on him. They put a shunt? in to keep one of the valves open, and I also was told he'll need another surgery. But first he has to recover from this one. Tonight after dad gets off all of us are going to the hospital to visit him.
It's kind of a scary thing. Because grandpa has already had so much go wrong. The years have not been very nice to him. I love him so much- so I hope with all the amazing new procedures they have now that they can extend his life one more time. He's already blind due to the diabetes, and he had his leg amputed at Christmas time 2 years ago. He's on dialysis for kidney failure. The last thing he needed was heart problems. Congestive Heart Failure..
Anyway. Thats the latest thing happening the past few days.
At least, having the gospel as the basis of our lives, we know that whenever the Lord does in fact say his time is up, we'll be with him again in the eternities.
